Search Engine Positioning Improvements – Getting Found Online

bBusinessman with fingers crossedYour website is finished, it looks great and now, all you have to do is sit back and wait for the potential customers to click on.  That’s a wonderful image but there’s a bit of wishful thinking in that scenario.  A portion of every business day should be spent thinking about search engine positioning improvements.  If you’re not up to the task, assign it to your webmaster, or hire a company that specialises in getting your business noticed online.  It’s been said that 65% of online activity begins with typing a phrase into a search engine.  The ranking your business holds in key search engines is too important to not do all that you can to optimise your position.

There are several key areas that must be examined and implemented so that your company can enjoy search engine positioning improvements.  An essential one, which is often completely ignored, is finding the right domain name for your business.  Many people think that finding a catchy, easy-to-remember domain URL is the key to naming their website.  Research has shown that by using keywords that describe your business in your domain name, you help drive traffic to your site and boost hits.  Some of those hits are bound to translate to customers.

Even though keywords are critical in achieving search engine positioning improvements, it’s important not to abuse them.  If you use too many of them, you can be blacklisted by search engines and your site will be considered SPAM.  That means your website doesn’t get listed and if it’s not listed, potential customers can’t see you.  Easy to navigate web pages are quite helpful in getting noticed and having repeat visitors.  It’s best not to be cutesy – no music should start playing as soon as a visitor clicks on to your home page.  Most people find that annoying.  Poor images and mirror pages are also turn-offs for potential customers.

Another factor which helps assure search engine positioning improvements for your website is picking a strong title tag, and giving a different title to each page on the site.  Insuring great in-bound links to your site is another important bonus.  The more links that link to your site, the higher its ranking in the key search engines will be.  Although there’s nothing glamorous in the work involved in boosting your ranks among the key search engines, it’s worth it.  The payoff could be really big.
